JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Every statewide elected official in Mississippi has at least one challenger this year.

Just before candidates' qualifying deadline Friday, a teacher signed up to run against first-term Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves in the Republican primary.

Alisha Nelson McElhenney, who lives in Moss Point and teaches in Alabama, originally filed Thursday for state Senate. She switched to the lieutenant governor's race Friday.

Reeves has $2.4 million in his campaign fund. This is McElhenney's first run for office.

All eight statewide offices, from governor to agriculture commissioner are on the ballot this year. So are regional offices such as transportation commissioner and all 52 seats in the state Senate and 122 in the state House.

Party primaries are Aug. 4, and the general election is Nov. 3.
