JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Stewpot Community Services could be closing two of its emergency shelters in January as a result of a shortfall in funding this year.
Executive Director Rev. Frank Spencer tells The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/1xp8LWy) the organization has seen reductions and cuts of grants total about $170,000 from their $1.8 million operating budget.
Spencer sent a letter to the city and county letting officials know about the loss of funding.
The Hinds County Board of Supervisors recently approved $10,000 in this year's budget to go to Stewpot, and District 1 Supervisor Robert Graham says he plans to ask for more in the future.
Stewpot was formed in 1981 when representatives from seven of the city's churches came together in an effort to help downtown Jackson's homeless population.
