Severe weather rattles parts of Miss., La. - Mississippi News Now


MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - The National Weather Service issued tornado watches and warnings in parts of Mississippi as severe weather moved through that state and neighboring southeastern Louisiana.


One Saturday afternoon warning was in Jefferson Davis County, where the service said a tornado was reported on the ground in the area of the Oak Vale community. The Sheriff's Office and the Prentiss police and fire departments had no initial reports of major damage or injuries. The weather service said another tornado was confirmed later in Lauderdale County in west Mississippi.


Warnings were posted at mid-afternoon in parts of Jasper and Smith counties. The weather service said it had reports of downed trees and power lines in Jasper County.


Tornado and severe storm watches also were in effect in southeastern Louisiana.
