​Tornado touches down in Mississippi amid severe weather in Deep South - CBS News

PRENTISS, Miss. -- Authorities in Mississippi said a tornado destroyed at least one house and caused widespread damage Saturday afternoon as severe weather moved through that state and neighboring Louisiana.


The National Weather Service in Jackson tweeted that the tornado touched down near the town of Rose Hill and was moving northeast.


A spokesperson for the Jasper County Sheriff's Office told CBS News the twister knocked down trees and power lines and pushed several vehicles off roads.


Initially, there were no reports of injuries or deaths.


A tornado was also reported in Jefferson Davis County near the community of Oak Vale. The sheriff's office and the Prentiss police and fire departments had no initial reports of major damage or injuries.


Tornado watches and warnings were posted for parts of Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana, along with severe storm watches.
