JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Democrat Joce (JOH'-see) Pritchett says she's running for Mississippi auditor because she wants to fight corruption and hold officials accountable for how they spend tax dollars.
The 47-year-year old from Jackson announced her candidacy Friday. This is her first run for public office. She faces Charles Graham, a retired Jackson firefighter, in the Democratic primary.
The two-term state auditor, Stacey Pickering, is being challenged in the Republican primary by Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler.
Pritchett owns an engineering firm and says she knows how to handle state contracts.
She says Pickering has been "asleep at the wheel" in fighting corruption.
Pickering says his office has recovered more than $21 million in misspent public money, and its investigations have resulted in more than 150 guilty pleas or convictions.
