Mother asks for justice in teen son's murder - Mississippi News Now

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson mother, still dealing with the murder of her 18-year-old son more than 10 years ago, is turning to the city council and police department for help.

Family members tell us Carlos Bell had gone to a graduation party in Jackson, then to his girlfriend's house.

The next day, a mail carrier found him dead of a gunshot wound, lying in the ground near the corner of Ridgeway and Missouri streets.

That happened in 2003.

Now they're asking Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes for help in getting justice for their son.

To this day, no arrest has been made in the case.

"He had just graduated from high school, and school is almost out now," Stokes said. "It would be the right thing, the right message to send throughout this city that, for other people getting ready to graduate high school, that we're going to get a murderer who killed an innocent young man off the streets."

Stokes said he also wants the city to make good on renaming a portion of Kelly Avenue to Carlos Bernard Bell Avenue in memory of the teen.

The city council approved the new street name in 2009, but the sign has never been changed.
