The city of Brandon submitted new water samples Sunday, Monday and will do so again Tuesday and Public Works Director Darion Warren says the boil water notice could be lifted Tuesday or Wednesday.
A boil water notice is in effect for much of the city. It includes Brandon Elementary, Brandon Middle School, Brandon High School, El Potrillo Restaurant, and all customers east of the police station on Highway 80.
It also includes all of Marquette Road and all customers south of the railroad intersection on Highway 18, along with the downtown area and all customers east of downtown.
Sampling showed the presence of total coliform bacteria in the water. You should boil water for one minute before using it.
Bottled soft drinks have been brought in for the lunch crowd at Sonic on Highway 80. The soda fountain is off limits, and water used for cooking is getting boiled first.
The owner at Friends and Company Restaurant, a little further east, only found out about the boil water advisory Monday morning.
"We boiled water and I went and bought bags of ice to last us all day," said Debbie Mallett.
Some bottled water was already on hand to make iced tea for customers.
On Monday, the boil water advisory was in its third day, but it was really the first day for students attending the Brandon Schools. All of them except Rouse Elementary is affected by the notice.
"Today we had almost 20,000 bottles of water delivered early this morning before school started to make sure students had water to drink," said Robin Haney, Director of Public Relations for the Rankin County Schools. "We've covered water fountains, put signs above the water fountains letting them know they can't drink from those fountains because water is not consumable today."
It's OK for anyone to wash their hands and take showers under this advisory.
Water must test clear for three days before the advisory can be lifted, so the earliest it can be lifted is Wednesday.
The City of Jackson has also issued two boil water notices. The first one affects the following areas: Comanche Drive, Navajo Road, Cherokee Drive, Chippewa Circle and Woodvale street. Approximately 150 connections are affected.
The second notice affects Key Street residents. Approximately 25 connections are affected with this notice.
