JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Jackson-area couple, who wishes to remain anonymous, has donated $100,000 to Stewpot Community Services, which has been struggling to keep its shelters open.
The money is to be used specifically for the Matt Devenney emergency shelter in Jackson, which houses women and children.
Executive Director Frank Spencer tells The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/1rjLjsE ) that the donation will allow the shelter to stay open for another year.
Matt's House and the Billy Brumfield emergency shelter for men faced closure this year after Stewpot lost about $170,000 in funding from federal grants and donations from United Way that supplemented its $1.8 million operating budget.
Stewpot was formed in 1981 when representatives from seven of the city's churches came together in an effort to help downtown Jackson's homeless population.
