HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - A former Forrest County jail supervisor who pleaded guilty in federal court to theft and mail fraud charges in the theft of food has died.
Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict tells WDAM-TV (http://bit.ly/1vxCiaE ) that 61-year-old Allen Haralson died at Forrest General Hospital Tuesday night. Benedict says an autopsy has been ordered.
Haralson was employed as the kitchen supervisor at the detention center.
Haralson pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett on Nov. 21 and was scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 5. Haralson had remained free on bail.
Prosecutors say the diversion of food and food-related items to Haralson and others took place between 2002 and 2014. They say the food items were ordered through the detention center and were then delivered to the homes of Haralson and the others.
