Nearly 9 inches of snow south of Tupelo - MSNewsNow - Jackson, MS - Mississippi News Now

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Nearly 9 inches of snow has fallen south of Tupelo in the community of Shannon, located on the border of Lee and Monroe counties.

Andy Chiuppi (KEW-pee), a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Memphis, says 8.5 inches of snow was on the ground as of 5:20 p.m. Wednesday. And, he says, residents should remain cautious as that figure could grow as the winter weather continues in north Mississippi and other areas.

Chiuppi says there's still about two hours left before the storm continues its trek northeast.

Chiuppi says temperatures, now at 31 degrees, are dropping and roads are slick so motorists should beware. No major accidents or deaths have been reported.

Most of north Mississippi remains under a winter storm warning through midnight.
