Coast officials push Legislature for 5th state pathologist - Mississippi News Now

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - Coastal Mississippi authorities say the state should hire a pathologist for their area.

They had been paying a private pathologist, but he died in early January.

Now they must send bodies to the state medical examiner's office in Jackson. The four pathologists there must perform more than 1,400 autopsies a year.

Joel Smith, district attorney for Harrison, Hancock and Stone counties, says that means investigators have to spend time getting the bodies there. He says tells The Sun Herald (http://bit.ly/1EGlqWs ) that often means losing crucial hours soon after a homicide.

Coroners, law enforcement officials and prosecutors hope to convince the Legislature to provide the money.

Coast coroners couldn't provide a number of how many bodies each month are going to Jackson.
