JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - All workers at the Country Club of Jackson saw was a red blur, then police everywhere.
They say the driver of a stolen Mercedes crashed behind a maintenance shop, then bailed on foot.
"A red car just flying through here crashed into one of our machines back there," says Junior Chavez. "Not long after that, cops came flying in here, motorcycles, he got out, took off running into the woods."
With the help of Ridgeland police, Pearl officers made their arrest after a brief foot chase.
33-year-old Michael Patrick Shannon wasn't taken to jail, but instead a hospital after officers witnessed him licking the pavement, after his capture.
"Indicators appeared to show he was under the influence of some type of narcotic due to that situation," says Capt. Brian McGairty. "At his request we allowed him to go to the hospital for evaluation to determine what. He may have overdosed on something. That was the motivation or the fuel to do what he did."
Police and witnesses say Shannon reached speeds of over 100 miles an hour during the chase.
At one point he crashed into a car at the intersection of Old Canton Road, and Canton Mart road.
Witnesses say the female driver was not seriously hurt.
Police later found out, he was armed.
McGairty says, "When they steal these vehicles we don't know if it's for other crimes. Then the fact we know there was a gun involved put more than just his life at stake, it put other lives at stake too, so it's definitely something we want to remove from the roadways."
Shannon is facing a long list of charges, including burglary, auto theft, assault and DUI.
According to the parole board website, he was recently released from prison on burglary charges.
