JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Senate race that started with a bitter Republican primary will come limping to a close Tuesday when Mississippi voters decide whether to send Thad Cochran back to Washington for a seventh term.

Cochran won a June 24 Republican primary runoff, but his opponent never conceded. Since then, the 76-year-old incumbent has largely ignored his two general election challengers.

The 56-year-old Democrat, Travis Childers, spent 2 ½ years representing north Mississippi in the U.S. House before being swept from office in a Republican wave of 2010.

Childers repeatedly called on Cochran to debate. Cochran said no, because he believes voters already know his record.

The Reform Party's Shawn O'Hara is also on the ballot. He has run unsuccessfully for more than a dozen offices in the past 25 years.
