JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - First-time candidate David McRae says he's challenging Mississippi Treasurer Lynn Fitch in this year's Republican primary.
McRae is 34-year-old attorney from Ridgeland. He's part of the family that founded the former McRae's department stores in Mississippi, and his campaign logo resembles the store signs. He says he's funding his own campaign for now and wants to cut government waste, if elected.
The 53-year-old Fitch is an attorney from Madison. Before being elected treasurer in 2011, she was director of the Mississippi Public Employees Retirement System and had worked for the attorney general's office and state House of Representatives.
Fitch could not immediately be reached after McRae announced his candidacy Tuesday.
McRae worked in the TV and film industry in California before returning to Mississippi to start law school in 2007.
