JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - First-time candidate David McRae says he's challenging Mississippi Treasurer Lynn Fitch in this year's Republican primary.

McRae is 34-year-old attorney from Ridgeland. He's part of the family that founded the former McRae's department stores in Mississippi, and his campaign logo resembles the store signs. He says Tuesday that he's funding his own campaign for now and wants to cut government waste, if elected.

The 53-year-old Fitch is an attorney from Madison. Before being elected treasurer in 2011, she was state Personnel Board director and had worked for the attorney general's office and state House of Representatives.

Fitch says she's proud of her record as treasurer, including the management of bond debt.

McRae worked in the TV and film industry in California before returning to Mississippi for law school in 2007.
