Former State Senator Tommy Robertson has been indicted on five counts of embezzlement. Robertson, 59, is accused of using his position as board attorney for the Signing River Federal Credit Union to embezzle $484,092 of loan proceeds which he held in trust for the purpose of distributing the funds in accordance with the applicable loan statements.
State Auditor Stacey Pickering and Jackson County District Attorney Tony Lawrence announced the charges Monday, saying the crimes occurred in April of 2013.
Robertson surrendered himself to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and was released on $50,000 bond.
"The indictment is an allegation of criminal wrongdoing, but under our law, the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty at a trial of this cause," District Attorney Tony Lawrence said. "My office will continue to work with the State Auditor's office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department to prevent, investigate, and prosecute allegations involving a violation of the public trust."
Robertson was a state senator for 16 years (1992-2008) and served as chairman of the state Senate Finance Committee for eight of those years.
This isn't Robertson's first run in with the law. In 1997, he pleaded guilty to a DUI charge in Biloxi. He was arrested again for DUI in 2003, following an Ole Miss football game. He was found guilty in that case, fined $633 and ordered to complete an alcohol safety class.
